From the series, “Fuego Fiduciario” or “Fiatfire”, an exploration of hyperinflation in Venezuela, “El humo me entra en los ojos” Smoke Gets in My Eyes, is a photograph of a 100 bolivares note with a portrait of Ezequiel Zamora. Zamora was a populist and soldier in several armed conflicts against landowners, including the Federalist War from 1859-1860. He was often called “The General of the Sovereign People”.
Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez named a land reform after him in 2011. But like many other national heroes featured on paper currency, he has become a symbol of economic decay and hyperinflation. (Interest rates in Venezuela reached as high as 63,000% in 2018). This particular 100-bolivares note, with a serial number ending in 8740143, was incinerated on a wood stove in June of 2024, photographed, and printed to canvas for display at the 2025 Bitcoin Conference in Las Vegas, May 27-29, 2025.
This is a 1/1 print that does not include a digital representation of the same artwork.
