The Marquee Club: Punks Not Dead

Original Venue Artifact | London, Circa 2002 Mixed media on Marquee Showcase Menu & Gig Notice Board

The Piece

This work is a gritty, high-contrast tribute to London’s punk roots, executed directly onto an original notice board from the iconic Marquee Club. The composition features a layered "Punks Not Dead" motif over a collage of underground imagery, capturing the raw, DIY energy that defined the venue for decades. The scuffed, deep-red frame is a physical part of the club’s history, showing the authentic wear of a high-traffic music venue.

The History

The Marquee Club is the spiritual home of British rock and punk, having hosted everyone from The Rolling Stones and David Bowie to The Sex Pistols. This specific notice board was removed from Dave Stewart’s (Eurythmics) iteration of the club, located in Islington, London. After the venue’s final closure in 2002, a select few of these functional artifacts were preserved and transformed into unique art pieces, bridging the gap between music memorabilia and contemporary Pop Art.

The Details

  • Provenance: The reverse features hand-written documentation: "Showcase Menu & Gig Notice Board - Removed from Dave Stewart’s Marquee Showcase, Angel, Islington, London. Closed 2002."
  • Physicality: Housed in the original club-branded "Marquee" light-box style frame.
  • Significance: A tangible link to the final chapter of London’s most famous musical landmark.
