Inside Warhol

Pietro Psaier (1936–2004) & Andy Warhol (1928–1987) Mixed media on paper: Watercolor, monochrome silkscreen, oil stick, pastel, and "diamond dust" pigments. Circa 1986 | Hand-signed by both artists | Artist Proof (A.P.)

The Work

Inside Warhol is a visceral, multi-layered exploration of identity and influence. Built upon a 1986 self-portrait by Pietro Psaier, the work utilizes a watercolor base and a gritty monochrome silkscreen to create a fractured, "double-portrait" of Warhol.

The composition is electrified by aggressive applications of oil stick and pastel, while a shimmering layer of purple "diamond dust" (a hallmark of the late Factory era) provides a glamorous, synthetic contrast to the raw, dark depths of the portrait. The result is a visual tug-of-war, a mirrored dialogue between the "Prince of Pop" and one of his most enigmatic associates.

The Collaboration & Controversy

Few figures in the Pop Art narrative spark as much debate as Pietro Psaier. This piece bears the bold, fluid signatures of both Psaier and Andy Warhol, serving as a physical testament to a relationship that has fueled decades of art-world speculation. Psaier claimed a long history of collaboration within Warhol’s Factory, often operating in the "renegade" corners of the scene where traditional documentation was secondary to the act of creation itself.
