The “सत् | SAT” series is a project of maze making which explores Art and Proof of Work as both premeditated endeavors and emergent mystery practices. Combining Left and Right Brain modalities, measured geometric shapes provides a logical, pre-planned framing that simultaneously stands in juxtaposition to and finds balance with the wandering, emotive process of the inner maze’s creation.

This piece is titled R E L E A S E and can be understood as an artistic and spiritual talisman for the same. Teardrops, Rain, Gemstones, the Hand of Hamsa, the Nazar, and Hanging Lights at the Grand Bazaar are among this piece’s guiding inspirations. Being the first work in a second series of 21 unique mazes, “Release” signifies the artist’s letting go of previous artistic habits to reimagine the maze making process anew. R E L E A S E encourages us to find freedom in casting off past conditions, letting them be washed away by a cleansing rain. It compels us to approach newness with wonder and whimsy and to shake off the cluttered, overfull baggage of our pasts.

Proof of Work, the verifiable and unavoidable expenditure of effort, is found in both the making and experience of the maze. The artist, when creating the maze, does not know where it will lead. The artist is merely the hand – following the sole rule that the maze must be solvable – while the maze, drawing from quintessence, reveals what it wills. It is a random walk of creation which can neither be faked nor fully understood and which cannot be wholly contextualized until completed. And for the viewer, to solve the maze is your proof of work – Did you find the center? What path did you take?

Finally, the Sanskrit “sat” सत् - which has deep and complex meanings connoting “absolute truth,” “reality,” and “the essence which is unchangeable” is found in the center of the maze. By beautiful coincidence – if one believes in such things as coincidences – the “satoshi,” also called the “sat,” is the name given to the smallest unit of bitcoin (100 million sats = 1 bitcoin). In the maze, सत्, with all its meanings, is the goal, while the maze itself represents one’s meandering and haphazard journey towards the center in pursuit of truth - be it in bitcoin or anything else that gives meaning in life.
