The Work:

The artwork contains an air of mystery, from the model's enigmatic gaze to the unusual modern surroundings. The identity of the model in FAKEPEARL remains unknown. Some have suggested that it was once the artist's muse, however, there is no compelling evidence to confirm this assertion.

The work captures a fleeting moment, the girl turning her head, her lips slightly parted while she looks towards the viewer. Layers of paint are used in a way that create the sensuality of the soft skin. Between her fingers she delicately holds an orange pill close to her mouth, as if to consume it. These elements effectively emphasis the dramatization of the artwork.

For centuries folktales have been told of men that have fallen madly in love with the girl simply by looking into her eyes. One 17th century account writes, "My life has become consumed by the thought of her gaze. It pierces into my soul. I may fall into a deep slumber as my dreams unfold but all I see is the glint in her eye. How beauty can be! Oh mercy, me! Damn you, Pepenardo."

The Artist:

Pepenardo, or commonly referred to as Nardo, Xnardo or Nardo X, is a pseudonymous artist, creative director, and dank polymath of the High Pepeaissance whose real name and identity remain unimportant yet subject to great speculation. A select few eyewitness accounts describe him as being “green, old, but wise as fuck, piercing eyes, casual - paint stained clothing, and possessing beautifully smooth dark hair”. Active since 1452, Nardo’s work epitomizes a renaissance humanist ideal in combination with dogmatic internet memetics.
