CitadelBlock #1: A Fire in Cyberspace - resin and dichroic glass, 17" x 11" x 6", 2022
The name of this art piece was inspired by a quote by Michael Saylor (Tweeted on Oct 25, 2020):
"Satoshi started a fire in cyberspace. While the fearful run from it and fools dance around it, the faithful feed the flame, and dream of a world bathed in the warm glow of cyberlight."
While Saylor's quote aptly describes the power of Bitcoin as a tool for civilization, applied to the art piece the name A Fire in Cyberspace can be taken as an inuendo to the fire of diamond - the name given to the effect of dispersion of white light into rainbow colors.
About the art piece:
The statue consists of ~550 dichroic prisms that are encased in 40 pounds of clear resin. The sculpture is crafted by laying out the prisms layer by layer and encasing each strata with resin and letting it cure as slow as possible to achieve a pristine glassy effect. When every layer is cast and hardened, the massive block is removed from the mold, polished and waxed to perfection.
By random arrangement of the prisms the play of light creates a sculpture that is dynamic and looks different from every angle. Placed in from of a dark background, the contrast is most striking and creates a truly surreal artefact that cannot be reproduced by any other technique. Especially when placed on a rotating stand, it creates a sight that seems digitally animated but is achieved entirely by analogue means using the diffractive properties of dichroic prisms.
About me:
I am an organic chemistry PhD student from Germany with a love for Bitcoin. Since becoming orange pilled in 2020 I wanted to contribute to the Bitcoin space. But since coding is a train that has left without me long ago, I see art as the best way to help carry the message of decentralized freedom-technology into the world.
