PEPEAIR (100 issued) - Created by MrHansel in September 2017, PEPEAIR is a Pop Art parody of the iconic Air Jordan image. Everyone at my school were all getting Air Jordan's in the 90s but I had to make do with a pair of knock off 'British Knights' from Bristol Market. There is a simplicity and design brilliance in that original Jordan logo that I’ve always loved and I thought it would be funny to take this iconic image of peak physical fitness and athletic perfection, and turn it into a frog with a beer gut.
Within a few weeks of its release in 2017 all 100 issued had sold, predominantly to a buyer known only as 'the whale' who held 96 cards. These were held for the next 4 years in which time the 4 cards that had made it out 'into the wild' were highly desired. The inaccessibility of the card let to it obtaining a kind of legendary status and high comparative value as collectors struggled to get hold of it. In summer 2020 PEPEAIR had a 3 second full screen exposure in the Emmy & Sundance award winning 'Feels Good Man' a documentary about Matt Furies’ struggle to regain control of Pepe from the far right. This further popularised the card, and in Spring 2021 one of the 4 available PEPEAIR was sold in a private sale for the equivalent of $25,000, a very rare occurrence at the time. In September 2021 a PEPEAIR sold via the CounterParty Decentralised Exchange for 2.3 BTC ($100,000 equivalent at the time), one the highest figures realised for a post Series 1, 100 issuance card. In October 2021 PEPEAIR was one of only three Rare Pepe's (alongside RAREPEPE, and PEPENOPOULOS), selected by TokenAngels to be auctioned at Sotheby's Natively Digital ‘the collectors’ event, a historic moment as the first major institutional recognition of the Rare Pepe community, and the first ever Sotheby's event to be held in the Metaverse.
